Polished concrete vs. ceramic floor: advantages and disadvantages

When building your own home, the type of surface we put on the floor may seem a less important choice compared to other aspects that we consider paramount such as insulation or heating system. However, on an aesthetic level, it is a real pity that we end up having a floor that does not suit us and that we will unfortunately see every day.

Sometimes it is not easy to balance what you want and what you can afford. And even if we finally put a more economical and beautiful tile, sometimes the quality of it leaves much to be desired and soon begin to appear the dreaded scratches and chips. This is obviously not to say that there are not fantastic, high quality tiles at a good price, but today we simply want to introduce you to a new option: polished concrete floors.

If you want to know the main advantages and disadvantages of polished concrete floors in new construction, read on…

ADVANTAGES:

Versatility

You may think that polished concrete floors are only for large areas, such as parking lots or large warehouses, for its easy application and practicality. However, its use can be extended to virtually any room and building, providing a very modern contemporary style. In fact, nowadays they are already applied even in kitchen countertops, walls and any surface you can imagine.

2. Anti-stain

Today’s polished concrete techniques imply a perfect waterproofing that avoids any kind of stains caused by liquids or other elements, so the floor will remain as good as new.

3. Continuity and easy maintenance

As there are no joints as in ceramic floors, the floors are completely smooth and of homogeneous surface, with consequent cleaning and easy maintenance. A wide range of special concretes are now available that do not require the classic expansion joints that were once mandatory.

4. Contemporary Aesthetics

As we said, the use of polished concrete in the home brings that extra modernity and originality to any room in the house. In line with the use of simple and refined lines, polished concrete is a great solution if you want to give your home that extra personality and good taste.

5. Who said concrete was gray?

You may think that concrete can only be gray, but the truth is that today you can get a thousand and one shades depending on the aggregate and pigments with which the concrete is mixed. After its application, it is polished and the results obtained are spectacular and enormously varied.

DISADVANTAGES:

Let’s be honest… it’s hard to find them! The main disadvantage is the cost, somewhat higher than the ceramic (although it all depends on the type of tile with which you compare it!) and another very important aspect is to find specialized companies with experience in this type of pavements that offer sufficient guarantees.
