How to cut concrete: the 5 most common ways

When it comes to cutting concrete, there are many factors to take into account, such as the size of the piece, the type of concrete or whether it is reinforced or not, among others. Whether you are an expert in the field or you have never faced this task before, here are five different ways to cut concrete and come out victorious, remember that we are experts at it! 😉

1. With diamond blades

We are talking about the typical diamond segment blades for concrete cutting, but be careful! As important as the grinder or machinery we are going to use, is also the type of diamond blade we need for one application or another. So if you have doubts about which machine to use or the most appropriate disc for your work, check our sections of grinders, machinery and discs where you can discover our wide range.

In general, the first thing to do is to make sure that we have a safe area to work in, clear and free of any obstacles or hazards. Then we will trace on the surface the work area we want to cut. It is very important that before starting the cut, we make sure that the disc forms a right angle with the surface. Then we can start by making an initial shallow cut and continue passing several times along the same line until the desired depth of cut is achieved. However, for larger thicknesses, we will have to look for larger options… read on!

2. With diamond wire

Paradoxical as it may seem, you can cut concrete with thread. But not just any wire. In fact, this type of cutting is used in heavy concrete demolition tasks or tasks involving structural changes, such as cutting pillars. And how to cut concrete with wire, you may ask. Actually, it is a steel cable with diamond tips that is installed on special machines with very resistant pulleys covered with special rubber. When it starts up, the cable begins to rotate between it and the cutting piece, and progressively cuts it. At Marathon we have a wide range of wires and machines to choose from. Watching them is quite a spectacle.

3. With water (yes, you read that right!)

If diamond wire cutting sounds surprising to you, wait until you read this. Water jet cutting is used in many industrial sectors to cut a wide range of materials, including concrete, because the power of water should never be underestimated! Depending on the pressure and flow rate, the water creates surface microbursts on the concrete, allowing it to be cut as if it were a giant saw. This technique is usually used in highly complex works and requires a large volume of water to be used, something important to take into account.

4. With a diamond crown

If instead of a linear cut, what we want is to extract a concrete core of a certain diameter, then we should opt for a diamond core bit. The core bits are usually installed in manual motors or large hydraulic drills depending on their size and the intensity of drilling that we need. At Marathon we are specialized manufacturers of core bits of all types of diameters and we also have a wide range of machinery and accessories for this type of drilling. Ask us here and we will advise you on everything you need!

5. With a chainsaw

It is normal that in our collective imagination, when we think of chainsaw we think of the typical motorized hand saws used to cut wood and tree trunks. But it turns out that, just like these, there are concrete chain saws that work (of course) with a diamond chain that allows them to deal with such a hard material. Thanks to its blade, this type of machines offer a considerable cutting depth, so they are perfect for, for example, opening windows in concrete walls or making a deep cut in this material.

Now that you know how to cut concrete in five different ways, we encourage you to leave us your comments telling us your experience with any of these ways or tell us which is the most common way you work with. Come on and write to us!
